Durant Sports supplied and installed a brand-new six-lane fixed open cricket practice facility at Mill Hill School in Middlesex, built to ECB-approved standards on our A-Base Non-Turf Pitch System and covering 640m². It was completed in September, in just two working weeks.
The brief
Mill Hill School needed a durable outdoor practice facility that would serve players at every level, from beginners through to the school’s strongest cricketers, and stand up to heavy term-time use.
The facility covers a 32m x 19.4m footprint on the school’s Park Field, with each lane measuring 21.96m long by 3.66m wide and 4.00m high.
What we installed
Before construction we carried out all remedial and preparatory works, including site marking, ground preparation and base levelling, to give optimal conditions for the build.
Installation began with our prefabricated underpad, laid over two precisely levelled and screeded layers of porous aggregate to achieve stability and drainage. The system was finished with our Durant-CW tufted carpet in line with ECB guidelines. The A-Base system is designed for outdoor use across practice areas, match-ready pitches and multi-use games areas, and holds up under all weather conditions and regular use.
Each lane was fitted with batting screens, anti-vermin protection and integrated training lines. We also installed our specialist surround carpet between each lane and along the rear run-up area, improving player footing, reducing wear and pulling the facility together visually.
The result
The school now has a six-bay practice facility that meets ECB performance standards and gives a safe, practical training environment built to last.
The facility was officially opened on Park Field during a school event attended by pupils, parents and Old Millhillians. The ceremony was led by Headmaster David Benson with guest Justin Langer, Head Coach of London Spirit and former Australian international, who commended the school’s investment in high-quality cricket facilities.
Other non-turf installations in 2025
Oundle School, single-lane practice system; Highcroft & Great Barr C.C., two-lane practice system; Lichfield Sports Club, three-lane practice system; Strathallan School, four-lane practice system.
